Yes, I've seen them eat thistles and they weren't starved either. Some plants they won't touch, but they'll scratch the dirt and dig dust baths, and trample everything. I would recommend covering your plants in plastic sheeting, then gassing them with CO2 for a few hours. I don't think too many bugs will survive that.
