This is from when I was renting an apartment, that's been decades past...

So I'm going through my old paperwork, you know, the bill stubs, reciepts, etc. that seem to collect over time, with the intent of throwing stuff away. I find this old phone message slip, the kind you get when you're at work and someone calls for you. Well, no one called for me, I got this one in the mail. It's hand written. In a first-class letter envelope, hand addressed. With a stamp, not metered postage. Thing I'm trying to convey here is that someone took the time to write this out.

First thing I wonder is WTF? Why am I getting phone message slips in the mail? Advertising, of course!

So, I call the number. Guy answers, I ask him "Why u send me this phonecall slip?" He tells me that he can save me money on my Countrywide mortgage.

"'k." says I. "You signed this slip?" "Yes," he tells me. "Did you address the letters yourself?" "Yes." He seemed pretty proud of the level of personal attention he was providing to me.

"So, you personally wrote my name, address, APARTMENT NUMBER, and zipcode on this envelope. Yes?" "Yes sir, I...did..."

Speech was getting slow here. I imagine a guy in a boring blue shirt and maroon tie, sitting at his desk, mouth moving up and down like pac-man without a pellet to eat.

"So," I continue. "Would you be willing to give me a cash-out mortgage on apartment '17-11'?"

"Thank you for calling sir." Phonecall ends.

That was a few years ago, I've thought about calling them again and asking if they still offer cash-out mortgages on leased property, but I'm lazy.

I still get a chuckle out of the idiot who suddenly realized his employer was sending out mail offering mortgages on rentals.
