On the other, as the return-to-office trend continues, it also gives employers an easy way to see who’s actually showing up.
This is even funnier if you know the reasons behind it.
The companies that have been demanding in‐office attendance usually don’t want to spend the money to have enough space for all of their employees. People end up sitting in different places every day. There are not enough meeting rooms. To talk to your teammates you end up doing video calls from your desk, which defeats the stated purpose of being in the office (the real reason is narcissism).
Some people have taken advantage of this to fake office attendance. Companies usually check in‐office attendance by looking at the building security system records to see who scanned in at least once during a work day. Some clever people will commute to the office in the morning, scan their security pass at one of the doors, then commute back home to start work.
They could force people to scan in and out at a time clock like a wage job, but maybe they’re trying to hide the fact that they’re treating their employees like school children. Having their mandatory work software spy on employees is more discreet.
If they require an in and out scan that is easy: find a coworker friend who lives close enough to you. One of you goes ro the office to scan in the cards and leaves them there. The other goes back later in the day and picks them up and scan out, then returns both cards to the other guy who takes them back for the next morning scan.
This reminds me of a story.
A friend who worked as a temp at some of the manufacturing warehouses in town said a friend of hers told his manager he was leaving the job but he never told the temp agency. He gave his badge to his friend and she scanned him in and out every shift. She said it took months for the temp agency to stop his wage payments. They never figured out who was scanning his card for him.
I know no fewer than 5 people that have said this is exactly the problem they have ran into and basically told the company they can fuck off and refuse to RTO until they get their shit together (they are ALL looking for new remote-only jobs right now).
