Let's cover a bit of Canadian Conservative history. The party used to be known as the Progressive Conservatives. Then some guys out West created the farther right Reform party. Tiny at first, the reform party eventually merged and took over the Progressive Conservatives, purged the progressives from the party, and changed the name to Conservatives. Since that time, the Conservatives have become ever more Liberal, until, once again, there is basically no difference between Conservatives and Liberals. And, also once again, we see a new farther right party forming as the PPC's. PPC's may be small now. In Canadian politics, that can change very very quickly. Past election patterns matter less than current trends. In Canada it is never a simple left vrs right argument. There are many flavors of left and right. Canadians mostly vote for the leaders and not the parties. If a leader cannot gain seats, more often than not they will be replaced. A good leader will pull in extra votes from the entire political spectrum. This is in part because the average Canadian does not really follow politics in any great detail. Politically, they don't know left from right. The fact that Trudeau cannot seem to win a majority once people got to know him means his own party will see him as the weak leader he really is, and they will be looking for a better leader within the party ranks. Trudeau is barely clinging to power, and the party knows it. Also, how well would the Conservatives have done if they had had the PPC's back in the ranks? This new Conservative leader is also already on the ropes for his failure to beat a weak Liberal leader. He maybe lacked appeal to the people, just as he failed to unify the Conservative base. AKA - he's not good enough.
