It's likely that a few of them are starting to realize that the whole thing was a scam from the start, that they are "useful idiots", that their life's work has been to bolster a fake "science".
But, the majority of them are going nuts because it's a death cult. The latter stages of pretty much all death cults is for the members to become increasingly zealous, until they try to kill other people or themselves.
