That will be the hardest to get used to. I'll try to think of down votes on Poal the same as "report to moderators" on other sites (a feature which I basically never use).

On voat, 25% of votes I gave were down. Mainly for if something was overrated or bullshit (I'd often reply too).

The traffick on voat is much bigger than most people realize.

It has lots of people posting and commenting.

A larger number just vote the posts and comments up or down.

But it has a massive majority that are just lurkers that read the posts with no interaction at all. Just look at the posts and compare the number of comments, votes and views.

Voat is a site that most users go to just for a different perspective and analysis. This site has been influencing the influencers in a big way.

Rush Limbaugh will usually go through the front page every day. Even some of his comments were verbatim off of here. While I am sure he didn't visit this place, I bet his staff did. I will never forget the day he called out the jew. The caller called in to talk about the USS Liberty and the Lavon Affair.

This stinks. I don't believe funding is the reason. Putt claims funding ended 9 months ago but did not mention it or bother to ask for support. He knows many people are willing to donate to keep Voat alive. I believe he was "persuaded" to shut it down.

It's pretty damn manipulative behaviour to sit on this for 9 months and then announce 4 days beforehand that he's pulling the plug. He would have had at least a couple of months warning, even with the assumption he had no intention to accept funding off others (which stinks to high hell because he did so before).

Putts behavior and reasoning at the end was utterly incomprehensible. Why keep the thing going for months out of your own pocket? Why not tell the users on the platform? It's not like he was doing any maintenance or housekeeping or anything at all, the site was well on it's way to death when he pulled the plug anyway. Why didn't he just pull the pin months ago, or had he prepaid the server / domain fees or something?

Click on your username (it is in the upper right corner for me), then click on gear icon (settings) then tick the box next to "Disable snow".

their top posts for the day are ~300 to 400, roughly 10x what this site has for traffic. We could be in for a deluge of voat refugees and down vote brigades.

If you've been on Voat recently you'll probably recognize me. Just another refugee passing through... At this point I'm considering just dropping off the radar entirely though. I'm going to lose a few good friends from that place, then I'll have to relearn who is who in another community, who to ignore, who to give a detailed reply to, who to poke fun at, etc...

I was on Voat since around 2015, never saw a post like that from Putt. It reeked of something odd from the first paragraph of that announcement through the rest of it.

Great shout. I actually believe that Putt actually and actively disliked about 99% of the userbase and content. It's one of the great ironies of Voat actually. Putt clearly and deeply believed in free speech....but his greatest allies where people whose views he probably found personally abhorrent.

That inherent contradiction finally solved itself.

He's been burned out for a while now. Money is the reason (excuse) he gave today.

Goats had been asking over and over again for there to be a donation option. For some, money is no issue and they offered. Others offered to provide free hosting.

I'm sure Putt has his reasons, and I'm fairly confident that web hosting costs aren't it. But that reason is what he saw fit to tell us.
