Pleroma and Mastodon started as Gnu Social/Statusnet work-alikes, and shared the protocol. As GS faded, Mastodon took the spotlight. It and Pleroma have evolved to the point where they don't federate anymore.

Mastodon was built with censorship in mind from the start, and it's creator once told me on the original mastodon.social that certain instances were blocked because of reasons. This was in response to me saying that it was hard to follow conversations when one side was not present due to Eugen's hysterical blocking.

Mastodon developers are also known for being dicks - once conversation on github someone was trying to solve interoperability problems and a dev jumped in and angrily said that even though it was federated they were under no obligation to help the person and didn't care.

Eugen just about shit himself stupid when Pixiv - loaded with anime and furry porn - created a mastodon instance. I think they finally went to misskey because of the stupid blocking.

TL;DR The Creator of Mastodon is the facist he claims to be blocking. Avoid.

No. Pleroma does still federate. Being an admin or a single user instance on the fediverse is a nightmare. It is a hub for jewish filth for faggotry, child abuse, porn and tranny content, unless you opt out federating that shit. Many scream censorship, but fuck em.

It still federates with GS?

Nope. It federates with only ten others and GNU social isn't one.
