New software costs money. People to run and constantly upgrade it costs money. (Even though those costs are a drop in the bucket for a company with that kind of market share.)

I know someone working in content moderation for social media sites. It does already scan automatically for images like that, not sure why they made it out to be new. Some has to be done manually which is what she did. She didn't last long in that job

I'd take a lot of what is said in the article with a pinch of salt, most of it is things they always did, slight tweaks and that are constantly being done.
