Actually they are not illegal they are just so restricted it take thousands of dollars and mountains of paperwork just to 'register' one. Ironically they Americans that go to the trouble would never commit a crime with one and Never have.

The paperwork and cost is so high they may as well be considered a contraband item at this point. No one, and I mean no one has 100,000 lying around to piss away on legally getting a machine gun. Let alone, no one who just spent THAT much money on automatic firearm would throw it away by shooting kids. Shooting an old slow firing M-60 will cost you about $465.00 per minute at current bulk ammo prices. Shooting something more exotic like an MG-34 or 42 will easily cost you over double that. You will need a fairly sophisticated reloading setup to get the cost of ammo down to manageable levels plus some really deep pockets to lay hands on a shootin' iron with spares and accessories. Saw a tricked out M-60 with five spare barrels go for $35,000.00 but that was some years ago.
