You don't.
I do if I want to stay current on certain free software and niche interests which use Reddit as their community hub. The situation of Reddit communities reminds me of the old GENIE forums. They were all welcomed in seductively and treated like kings until they weren't because the corporation couldn't milk them for more.
GEnie was running on legacy equipment with legacy code, alongside the TPS and CICS. It got turned off due to the Y2K problem. While it could have (and should have at least) had the roundtable information ported to the Internet, there was just no value at the time.
I don't remember my GEIS login anymore.
The Delphi webforums still exist, but the groups I previously chatted in are long gone. I think some GEnie refugees fled to Delphi webforums. It's getting hard to remember events from that time. Probably my alcohol abuse of those years doesn't help.
I forgot my login long ago. I do remember being active in the Apple II group on GEnie. Eventually I migrated to Usenet and pissed everyone off there.
