Many treatments are actually synthetic versions of vitamins. They push this version since they can patent. Even though the death count is significantly higher with the synthetic version and extremely rare otherwise.

Tom Selleck even did a public awareness commercial depicting the FDA breaking into homes at gun point, like a drug raid. This was one of the first things I tried to find.
The MD Anderson stuff was widely covered by the Houston Chronicle. After the initial report with preliminary results were reported as successful and approaching chemo success rates, the entire research program was shut down.
Shortly after, new chemo products were announced which reported higher success rates. The vitamin research project was then denounced by the FDA and they claimed misconduct on the part of the researchers.
My mother was a cancer patient there and personally spoke with one of the researchers twice. The first time they were glowing about early results. The second, after denouncement, she was crying saying she would lose her license if she spoke about the research.
Ultimately the President told the FDA to back down as it was creating significant public backlash.
