How is a doctor supposed to have time to research every single issue that the human body might have on a continuous basis and keep up to date on all things medical? They don't. Instead they trust others to do the research and then they act using the "best information available" to them at the time. Sure some things are pretty well figured out, but many things aren't, and doctors like most other people are lazy and want to put in the least work for the most gain.
