What a circle jerk of stupidity.
So, I have been working my way through history, politics, pyschology, etc. to try and understand what is happening, explain the past and predict the future. I think I have a reasonable grasp on the key concepts by now and can make predictions that have some kind of reasonable predictive power. Not great, but directionaly reasonable.
Occasionally I bump into the front page of Reddit, and today I bumped into the above sub thread.
Instead of making the usual complaints and observations about reddit users, check out the "PSYCHOLOGICAL PASTICHE" of the left.
Look at how:
Warm and fuzzy everything is.
Look at how self integrated all of their view points are.
Look at how tropes like racism, sexism, xenophobia, etc., are kind of packaged like mini nuclear bombs just waiting to be used against someone.
Look at the in-group cohesion of all posters. Look at just how comfy (not comfortable, that is a different word, comfy is the right term for everyone in that thread) everyone is, or would be, if first coming upon such a thread especially if very young and naive.
MOST IMPORTANT: Look at the kind of fake impenetrability of their value systems based around the mini-nukes mentioned above: racism, sexism, xenophobia, etc. On the level they are being presented, they "seem" as utterly impenetrable and incontrovertible truths that cannot be challenged. Kind of like sacred eggs discovered and polished to incomprehensible shine that must never be dulled or sullied with the human touch.
It is REALLY interesting to think about the psychology of these people. The only label that I can find for this is "pastiche". A kind of fake, wallpapering over reality where all the rough edges, bumps and creases have been smoothed out.
The way they describe their enemies "the conservatives" in this very thin vaneer of hatred painted in a kind of truthyness that isn't entirely incorrect is really fascinating.
And, obviously, this is a generic example of a particular feature of human psychology, that we believe what the group we are allied with believes so this exists everywhere. If you have ever spoken to a muslim, they sound EXACTLY like these people.
But, just think about the one or two youngsters or even boomers, that live ensconsed in that room of perfect intellectual pastiche. Everything seems perfect, makes sense, all the colours are bright, you know who to hate and who to love. But then, there is a small earthquake and a tiny door in the floor she never noticed before gets adjar. She opens it, there is a rope hanging that she can use to scale down and out of her comfortable little pastiche room. Imagine how frightening this must be to them? Imagine how far they have to scale down the rope before they even start to see light in the perceived darkness of a new cognitive frame.
Classic platos cave psychologically.
I just wanted to share a really wonderful example of "psychological pastiche" on public display.
