Damn I am impressed. Never used Gab or heard of Torba (I am ignorant I guess). But that gave such a good impression I will start using Gab right now.
My opinion. They need to get off the whole "free speech" bullshit. There are 0 websites on the clearnet that are free speech. Most people do not even understand what free speech is. Most people think being able to post their favorite political meme without it being taken down is free speech. Wrong! Anyone who thinks they have free speech on the internet is a fool that's been tricked into thinking censored speech is free speech.
Torba is one of many sending "letters to Elon", then making it public that they did so. They just want their piece of the internet attention. Gab is nowhere near at the same level as twitter and would not serve the same purpose.
What do you consider free speech then? No censorship at all, not even spam or bots? Then the service would be unusable.
not even spam or bots
I'm not sure what you mean by that part.
What do you consider free speech then?
No censorship at all
Correct. Otherwise it's not free speech. Period.
What do you mean by no censorship? Like no moderation at all? Such a system would be open to abuse to the point where a bad actor can make the service unusable for everyone else. I don't see how that's something to strive for.
Gabs purpose is a fallback, to be a 2nd and to make sure the leader stays honest / free market competitive. He plays a huge role as / while not being the front runner.
He won’t get front status until the banks and app stores unban him. His move shows he may be deep state owned as he more less simply wanted to stop Elon with nothing in return for anybody really.
Torba's letter to Elon Musk:
Dear Elon,
I'm rich too. No, really, I've got lots and lots of money, and that makes me powerful. We rich, powerful men need to stand together against other rich, powerful men who don't like us. You help me and I'll help you. You give me two billion dollars, and I'll give you a largely honorary seat on the board of a company that may cease to exist in a year or two. No, really, that's my best and final offer. Toods.
Andy
