They are scaling up because of the Twatter mass-deletion of accounts and the non-left accounts exodus.
Also Trump has been invited to join so Gab is being deplatformed by the Marxists.
The canvas is ripping the echo chambers are forming.
Yeah this is not surprising but it is still news worthy given the current state of affairs.
the gab team did release a statement, either last night or early this morning, that since the uptick in traffic, en-masse, there was going to be connection intermittency due to HW upgrades and installations.
deploying new HW should incur only very brief downtimes... I know because I do this shit for a living. It should be back in under 10 min if they are just deploying capacity. If it is not back in 60 min then we know that it was at the very least some form of migration and not just a deployment.

I also do this shit for a living and I know a bit about their infra. Enough to know that all of the usual expectations are out the window due to the things they've had to do to make themselves resilient to DoS and deplatforming.
Could be increasing capacity, could be DoS, could be something else. Best to just go with what they said for now.
