The modern Jew most certainly is not "semitic." Semitic, being a Semite, is so spelled because the ancient Greek had no letter "H". It is more correct to say "Shemite," meaning a descendant of Shem. Abraham, David, Jesus, and the Children of Israel descended from Shem, one of Noah's three sons -- Shem, Ham, and Japeth. Genesis doesn't talk much about Ham AFAIK but of Japeth it is written that his first-born son was Gomer. Gomer's first-born son was Ashkenoz.
Most modern-day Jews openly proclaim themselves to be "Ashkenazi Jews," descendants of Ashkenoz. By this, their own admission, they are therefore not "Semites" nor are they the Biblical Children of Israel that every Christian in the world is going to write a blank check to. They are not even in the same branch of the family tree.

Semitic has a very specific genetic and religious meaning, which is probably more meaningful than a linguistic family. I speak Spanish, pendejo, but am Scott/Irish/German and not Hispanic.
Semitic in terms of race is defined as "descended from Shem." I don't recall offhand the origins of the Arab peoples.
