Just like the Nobel Prize, the Pulitzer Prize stopped being one of merit and became a tool to push a narrative--to give the air of credibility to an otherwise unsupported story.
For a good example of this happening with the Nobel Prize (Nobel Peace prize excluded--those are obviously political), see the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics that was given to LIGO founders for supposed gravitational wave detection. While in the past such prizes were awarded decades after the discovery, the 2017 prize was awarded a mere year after gravitational wave detection was announced.
