Ransomeware is still around and still effective. The biggest difference now is they charge an amount that makes them consider the option of paying. The amount is higher than just replacing the hardware, but cheap enough to get them money.

Makes sense, they'd also be able to fund making some beast ransomware. Stuxnet was ages ago, and that wasn't even ransomware
