The 'lawmaker' who is proposing this is fucking stupid, cause the crops they harvest go to the prisoners. They harvest the same food they eat.

Also how is it better to just stick them in a cell with nothing to do for however many years they are there for?

It's rather unproductive to just throw a bunch of men into a prison and have them do literally nothing for their sentence. At least they could contribute to society in some way. Perhaps a cotton farm or something...

In lots of Louisiana’s poorer parishes (counties), prisoners raise a lot of their own food. With this legislation, the prisoners just sit back like welfare recipients waiting for more gibs.

That's exactly what Angola prison does. They farm for themselves to lower the cost of housing prisoners.
