Well wear on a usb drive is can be caused by overuse and from spinning up often. Well if you watch anime and movies your usb drive will spin down after a period and spin up when your video cache is empty to fill up again. Well I found when I set my cache on smplayer with mpv I would leave the computer to have a smoke or use the bathroom and when I came back the video would have to wait for the drive to spin up again. Well in preferences under the performance there is a cache tab, I set the cache to max for local files at 99999kb and now I can leave for an hour and the video just starts immediately and I realized my drive didn't have to spin up to watch the video and my drive was working a lot less, just caching the chosen file and then spin down. Might likely give me months or another year of use compared to spinning up 3 times for one video. I figured I'd share this little discovery I made with you guys so you can extend the life of your drives and also have smooth playback even when you leave for a few minutes.
