I'm such and idiot. I just remembered a video I saw a year ago. It said don't install a new distro to try a desktop environment but install it on your currently installed distribution and logout and login with the new DE/WM to try it out. I just did this with Namib and unlike debian it installed with ease and most of my programs are still usable that I installed. It was right there in front of me and I missed it. I am now basically running arch with icewm and programs preinstalled by myself. It's a little bit of a learning curve but not extreme.
