I've wanted to try IceWM for a while on a distribution without a bunch of crap on it already. I'm going to install Debian and install with the terminal ICE and on the YouTube channel Distrotube he loves this WM. I got mad respect for Distrotube, the guy is thorough and speaks good English and explains what needs to be said and shows what is going on so you can see exactly what he does, great channel.

IceWM was a struggle to setup user friendly when I last tested several years ago. But it might have improved since.

It seemed rather upfront, they have themes that are added automatically and iceme which adds items to menu when they are installed and themes can be added simply and there is a site I found a month ago https://www.box-look.org/ themes for openbox icewm and other wm's of that type.

"distribution without a bunch of crap on it already" is not how I would describe debian. I'm a hardcore systemd hater, though. I've never used ice, but it looks similar in spirit to fluxbox, which I do use. linux desktops environments are pure fucking cancer, so I think you're on the right track. Hopefully it works out for you op.

Debian would not add me even though I did it in the terminal as a su. It would not add me to adm or sudo or root. Simple fucking user that cannot login as root, kind of useless with a setup like that. Couldn't even uninstall a program with the messed up software installer, no prompt for password or anything. Will be killing it soon. IceWM was quite nice and easy but all the debian bullshit was driving me up a wall not having a root login to do basic maintenance.

Hey you know what I like about your posts? I've been using unix/Linux since the 90s and often you post something I've never even heard of, much less tried, like IceWM. Thanks man!

Well it's official Debian sucks. I used the terminal to su me and added me to sudo wheel and root and adm since I was not in any of them when it installed. THe software center sucks terribly. I tried to remove a program, it said I didn't have the credentials to do it, no sign in like every other distro just a denial and fuckoff shawn. Hell when I first tried to install shit it was asking for a debian install dvd even though I installed with a usb stick, you'd think there would be an option for usb.

This is weird, the software center asks for my for password when I launch it. I don't remember what I did (I certainly added me to sudoers, just don't remember how, maybe I edited the file), but shit just werks. At least for my needs.

Damn. I got no time for crap like that. Just finished installing latest Mint Cinnamon 19.2 on some 10 year old pcs with win7 running on a vm. Runs like a champ! With CPU and RAM to spare!

I wish they'd give some of these old window managers some functionality updates. I remember the icewm menu was a pain to create. Best get some kind of lightweight launcher. You have to try dmenu if you haven't already

Edit: Wow. I thought iceWM was a dead project, but just saw they've had regular releases, including several this year. I'm going to have to try it out again. The last time I tinkered with it was 15 years ago.
