I installed virtualbox and installed slackware distribution salix. Seemed pretty nice got online changed some stuff and all that. I went to update and install some software and the package manager just sits there or locks up. It might because I made the vdi for it using MXlinux so the vdi was on a usb stick. It's like the damn thing does not know how to install to the OS on a usb stick since it thinks it's on a hard drive. I was so looking forward to trying out slackware for the first time and this shit happened kind of lets the air out of my balloon.

wow not sure if I'll give slackware a try then.

I think it's my setup mostly. If I did it on a harddrive without virtualbox it might have run fine. It was actually using xfce desktop and has a real package manager and a tool called sourcery to download and compile code. It's a pretty complete distro but on virtualbox like a few distros it sucks the big one.

Almost everything I do is in VMs so probably not for me.

You seem more like a BSD guy anyways.

You take that back.

I'd say Gentoo but if you haven't done Slackware then that is a super pain in the ass.

I think debian and arch based distros are the way to go

I think you're right, I've never had a great amount of luck with Ubuntu or puppy derivatives for one reason or another and I don't run a server so no reason to try anything related to Redhat.

Ubuntu should be easy to get up and running however I think mint is better since it removes the ubuntu spyware

slackware

package manager

What?

The hell's wrong with you? Build things from source, the way nature intended. Package Manager. What a fucking liberty! When did people become so fucking workshy? You want to sit there, growing fat off the processed fat in that packaged food product you're (mis)managing down your gullet, while all the work is done for you?

Don't want to write the software.

Don't want to build the software.

Don't want to install the software.

At this point you're no longer using the computer. The computer is using you - its very own dedicated meat-based co-processor, running at the clock-speed of butter. I'd complain more, but everyone probably gets the point by now.

I'd offer some advice, but your ticket here is as clear as coal. What package manager? Is there anything in the logs? Is the program itself dying or is it choking waiting for access to something? Anything particular in the VM configuration that might make anything behave in a nonstandard fashion?

Can't do shit without knowing shit.

Totally this! Slackware is the Meccano of Linux.

It gives you the tools. It's up to you to use them.

./configure; make clean; make; make install

How hard is that?

Set those kernel options! Build your system how you want it built!

Package managers are for the weak and weary ;-)
