Personal suggestions? Use LXDE or XFCE for your display manager for older hardware. It's very light weight and works great on old hardware and is responsive. If you have other suggestions, post them please.
I have plenty of VERY old hardware (10 years or older) that works just fine with a light weight distro/display manager. They are mostly just "browsing boxes" but if that's all you are using it for then what's wrong with that?
