Their roadmap (wiki.xfce.org) still says “Keep X11 compatibility for the foreseeable future”. Splitting their X11 window manager and Wayland compositor seems to be their strategy for keeping X11 around.
This part of the dev blog post (alexxcons.github.io) was interesting:
- Some X11 window management concepts just aren't available or supported by Wayland protocols at this time, and dealing with those differences can be difficult in an X11-first code base.
Those X11 window management concepts will likely never be supported by Wayland.
