It had everything to do with anarchism, the real thing not that garbage they are trying to pass off as /r/anarchism on reddit. In recent years though, there has been a concerted effort to take it over by extremist feminist/nazi/SJW/socialist faggots. Linux looks to be doomed with the exception of a few holdouts like Slackware and the new Devuan. NetBSD, I believe, is our last real hope.
