Just installed Mint Cinnamon a couple hours ago and made sure to get the Ubuntu based version.

There have been a half dozen ways to shutdown even before systemd. Try init 0, poweroff, etc. Now it's systemctl poweroff with the partly dreaded systemd.
I just wouldn't complain about this in particular. There's a lot worse.
