Haven't seen it gain a lot of traction in the major distros. Either way: The days of X are numbered, whatever your feelings about Wayland are either way.
XLibre has a lot of promise. It was started by the most active maintainer of X11. They have already merged in loads of updates and fixes that were delayed or rejected from X11. They’re also implementing new features like security compartmentalization for apps (one of the main advantages of Wayland).
You’re right, it needs to at least become a standard package in the major distros, but if it does it will become the answer for all the people fed up with the stubborn Wayland developers.
