Bought an extra stick of memory and a 1tb ssd for a used 2013 laptop. Made a usb iso of mint, put the new memory in, stuck the clean ssd in (zero formatting), booted the device from the usb and installed mint.

Granted I know the learning curve really begins now but, unless someone is absolutely against learning something new, I heartily recommend at least trying a user friendly linux distro like mint.

FYI: Tor browser is much faster.

I hope you find this computer to be a great daily driver!

You probably have libre office already, but that will be your word processor, spreadsheet, etc.

If you need games try Steam which has a big selection of games for Linux.

Gimp is a full featured Photoshop alternative and is excellent.

VLC is the "everything" player for movies and music and supports podcasts too.

Tor is great, but I think poal blocks Tor, so you need a normal browser. Try Firefox ESR to be conservative, but there are heaps of options.

Evolution is a common email and calendar program.

You should be able to move in to Mint and make it work well. Welcome aboard!

I just did the same thing. I have an old Getac laptop that I was thinking of getting rid of and Linux on an ssd woke it right up. I've been using Linux in some form since 1996, and while I did learn a lot from distros like Slackware, I'm at a point where I just want the stuff to mostly just work. Mint is nice, easy to install and maintain, and if I f*ck it up, it has timeshift to bring it right back.

Have fun with it.

Good work. Post here if you run into problems. Lot's of people here are using Linux for a lot of different things.

You are going to find that most things "just work" almost to a surprising degree.

I'm still happy with Linux Mint.

And it just keeps getting easier. If all you do is email and utoob there really is no learning curve at all.

Installing Linux can either be a dream or a nightmare.

I looked at lots of tutorials that required cloning software and backing up and other stuff. I decided since the laptop I bought had no important data, I'd take a chance. Put in the new ssd with a usb boot and install of the linux distro.

Worked a treat and now I'ma playin' with linux.
