I haven’t worked with the X11 API directly, but those who have say it is a crusty mess. There are bugs in the API that cannot be fixed because fixing them would break thousands of programs and libraries that had to be written to depend on the buggy behaviour. That’s only one its problems. It was also written before a lot of modern graphical environment features were invented. It is horribly out of date.
If you do not work with it directly you are shielded by a mess of work‐arounds that others have to maintain.
