I am currently running a dual monitor setup one being 1920x1080 and the other 2560x1440. I'm running windows due to work, but I may be getting some upgrades soon that would let me dual boot or run windows in a vm more easily. I may be gifted a 5700XT to replace my GTX 1070 some more RAM and more storage.

Currently I am using nvidia's DSR to fake 1440p on the 1080p monitor to keep things consistent when moving between the two screens.

When I start using Linux again (I've been stuck with windows for a few years) I'd like to keep that fake 1440 or a visual equivalent to it.

Long story short, any advise on how to get this type of experience using either nvidia and/or AMD GPUs?

Well, after some research it basically comes down to use Wayland or fiddle-fuck with Xrandr.

KDE on Wayland supposedly makes this easy. Otherwise you need to tinker with X config settings. KDE (discuss.kde.org)

Gnome seems to need Wayland or registry hacks, how very windows of them. gnome (askubuntu.com)

I am sure there are other ways based on DE but I'll probably just hand tweek the xorg.conf (wiki.archlinux.org) just like the good ol' days unless Wayland is the better option for my eventual setup.

Seems kind of dumb to answer my own post but, it seems it had some attention so it'd be a shame to not share any info I'd learned.

Now to grab some distros and fuck about.

What do you need a dual monitor powered by 5700XT on a linux box for? Are you intending to game on the linux box? If so, you're better off sticking with micro$haft.

If you want to game, you'll need to dual boot, as running winblows in a VM is going to kill gaming performance/compatibility.

Cannot help you with specifics of display sizing.

Oh I'm well aware of the issues with a VM. If I was worried about that I could just run the 1070 through a bypass in the VM.

It's just been several years since I have run linux, back when Wayland was barely getting to experimental. I was just wondering if there was an easy button for screen scaling these days.

I do play games sometimes and 95% or more would be fine through proton/wine.

I may just stick with the 1070 because the hasle may not be worth the small boost the 5700XT gives.

If you need the full power of your 5700XT, then running it in a VM is always a performance hit, GPU bypass or not. The guest's architecture is still being emulated, even if there are "native" implementations for your systems processor.

Unless you're constrained to a VM, if performance is your concern, you should avoid running in a VM.

I'm curious of your need for such a GPU on a linux box, given it appears you're not doing development work that requires heavy linalg computations, like what ML applications require, for example.

You may be able to put your 5700 to better use than running a linux box.

The biggest workload is image inference via stable diffusion and rendering via Blender. So for stable diffusion AMD only kind of pushes toward Linus as support on windows is just not there yet.

I've been trying to create products that use inferred images. And yes, I know that AI art can't be copyrighted but the final product can be branded and protected to an extent.

As for going back to Linux, I have always preferred Linux and have just used Windows for work and a few games. Work is done through browsers and remote desktop so no real need for anything powerful just a minimum of two screens for all of the windows to be visible at once. 4 to 6 actually, a chat, a browser, the remote desktop with three windows, and another browser for myself during the lulls in work, and I often run stable diffusion in the background too. If I had the money I'd get a third one and maybe a fourth.

Games are along the lines of Minecraft with my sons around 1 or 2 times a month, some lite emulation, and whatever Epic is giving away that seems cool. So next week I'll play Deus Ex for a few days if it's meh, or until I beat it if I like it. Which means that if Proton/Wine doesn't work for any particular game I don't play it and I don't care. I don't play much anymore anyway, I just don't find a lot of games entertaining like I used to either because I have changed as I got older or games are shit these days. Probably both.

Of course all of the normal browsing and video watching, photo editing, torrents etc...

I said the 1070 would be the one to go through bypass, the 5700XT and rocom's current issues in windows would be the biggest push factor for going back to maining linux again.

Windows has issues that bug the hell out of me and so does linux + whatever DE I use. I miss middle click paste, I still hate file explorer even if it has tabs now, virtual desktops on windows are still too clunky to use well, fuck the start menu from anything after XP, and more. KDE has things that bug me too, windows don't update well on resize, some integration rough spots, as well as some other small things that I can't quite recall at this time because it's been years. Gnome is just commie as fuck, but they at least get system/service integration right, for the ones they let you have. I do like some of the "smaller" DEs too but they often lack some feature I like or are ugly.
