I havent tried it yet and I will before the change but linux will recognize my external hard drives?

I'd suggest trying a liveUSB first to confirm. Some distros have issues auto-mounting external hard drives, others see them right away and mount em no issues.

I switched to Linux Mint over a year ago or so now. I still have dual boot for windows but I think I have only used it once in the past 6 months, and that was only because I was looking for a couple of old bookmarks.
