Description

When it comes to Linux Distros, each are either managed by their community or by a company. With recent news, it becomes clearer than ever that those managed by a company should be avoided. With a recent history of being untrustworthy, Red Hat is on the list to steer clear of - but they're not the only example. With histories of misleading claims (with some being downright lies) it's time to leave corporate-owned Linux distributions behind. Here's why.

--- Individual Sections --- 00:00 - Introduction and what I'll cover in this video 01:45 - To be fair, Red Hat has had a HUGE impact on Linux 03:10 - A history of Red Hat and CentOS up until now 07:46 - Red Hat is putting source code behind a pay wall?! 09:05 - Now it's harder for downstream recompiles to exist 10:40 - Can Red Hat do this? 12:00 - Red Hat has a history of breaking trust 13:54 - Canonical ALSO exhibits lesser (but similar) behaviors 19:08 - Why Learn Linux TV has switched AWAY from Ubuntu

As much as I dislike corporations having their hand in Linux and open source, it's important to note how much both companies have contributed to Linux. Red Hat in particular. Money invested into Linux is development that benefits everyone. I think the big outcry right now is that Red Hat doesn't want people to continue to dip into their "well" freely anymore. I personally don't see an issue with this. They make it clear that their product is not free. And they do add a lot of work to the Linux upstream, via their work on Fedora. It sucks for the folks who relied on the free ports of their distros, but you wouldn't expect Microsoft or Apple to allow someone to freely use their OSes. Same shit here.
