They're not comparable because they fundamentally cater to different audiences.

Some groups are trying to market linux to the every-day user, which is not going to fly for certain people. If all you do is web browse, then the OS you're using doesn't really matter.

If you want your OS for gaming, linux is out of the question.

In the software development field? Use a linux OS and you'll never look to windows again.

There will always be a gap. WIndows is backed by a massive corporation and is a paid-only product, whereas linux is mostly open-source, lacking big-money backing to fund high-cost development like graphics drivers, etc.
