I have a USB-3 drive that I use as a tertiary backup when I travel. Every now and then it goes into Read Only mode and I have to try to figure out all over again what to do in order to make it Read/Write again. The Disks utility... manually mounting and unmounting... etc. etc. Any tips or tricks to keep this from happening?

It would be a potentially useful data point to see if the same thing happens in Windows. I have a vague memory of an SD card that was only read-only in Linux and fine in WIndows. However, it could be read/write in Linux if it was being accessed by root. I would play around with it and I feel like I'd get it working but nothing would stick.
