POSIX shells (Bash, Dash, etc.) respect both prefix and postfix redirections. By that I mean:

$ > foo.tmp echo BAR
$ < foo.tmp read line ; echo $line
BAR

It's effectively the same as if I had written:

$ echo BAR > foo.tmp
$ read line < foo.tmp ; echo $line
BAR
