dosemu2 is a virtual machine that allows you to run DOS programs under linux. It was started as an attempt to re-incarnate the famous dosemu project under GPLv2+ license (dosemu1 license is controversial), but have grown into an entirely new project with different ideas, goals and code. Also it has a much wider scope than dosemu1 had: instead of just being a virtual machine, we also develop our own 64-bit DOS

If I can keybind a PS4 controller to keyboard inputs instead of being limited to 4 buttons, the d-pad, and a mouse then I'm in. Descent only works with 2 sidewinders through an old gameport that you will only get on an old AT mobo or going full keyboard.

I can barely get this to work on actual hardware. Don't have 2 sidewinders, just one sidewinder as CH flight stick and a regular 3-axis 2 button. It kind of works, on Tuesdays, when wind is blowing SSE at 12 MPH.

That's why only keyboard mapping works for Descent. WASD and IJKL for movement with QE/OU and Space/Alt/Ctrl for main keys.

If dosemu2 can do keymapping to the gamepad then I will completely abandon dosbox.

e: Oh, and 4D _+4 action isn't even good enough for Redneck Rampage.

Yep, unless you have a couple of real CH flight sticks or something else on that list of sticks it supports. Which I don't have... yet. Then you're still limited to just a few buttons due to the way the gameport interface worked.

I'd really like to run it under pure DOS, but instead the best I can do is run it under Win95/98 and use something like Joy2Key or whatever its called. On the Win98 Pentium Pro 180 MHz machine, it runs pretty much perfectly. On the Win95 486/DX4 120 MHz machine, it misses a frame or two or five sometimes.

There's a modern game called Overload you can get cheap on GOG that is like a spiritual successor to Descent, similar story and everything. Bought a pair of ambidextrous sticks just for this purpose. Fantastic game, no woke bullshit, highly recommend.
