Vulkan, and more specifically all the open source projects that rely on it, have done so much for Linux Gaming in just a few of years.

I never imagined that, barring anti-cheat middle-ware, it would be possible to play so many PC releases within a few weeks of release, if not right on day one.

Good times.

I know!!! I remember trying to use Wine back in 2012-2015, and it was....a painful experience in most cases. Now? Thanks to the Vulkan layer used by Proton, the ONLY games I can't play are games with blatant anti cheat built in. Not to say some games don't still need tweaks (Like Fallout 4), but by and large the tweaks are minor and the performance is almost as good as native.

I only hope Vulkan continues to gain steam to overthrow the bloated mess that is DirectX

I only got into Linux back in 2016, so I avoided the worst of the dark years. Even so, before DXVK and D9VK became a thing, I recall all the tweaks I had to do just to get a 5 or 10 year old game running.

I've recently been on an Assassin's Creed binge, after originally dropping the series after Black Flag, and it's been such a sea change going from that in 2016, to being able to play Rouge, Unity, Syndicate, Origins and Odyssey with just a click of a button.
