This will be the death of RHEL. The number one use case for CentOS was to run CentOS in all of your dev/qa/stagging/pre-prod/etc. environments and then run RHEL in production where it needs to be 'supported'. Red hat does not offer any form of 'developer license' making it prohibitively expensive to develop against if you have to pay for all of those development environments. CentOS was the solution for this. CentOS was not just 'based on' or 'compatible with' RHEL... it was a clone of RHEL. You could run your entire development team on CentOS and then just push to a Red Hat prod environment with confidence it was perform the same...

When Red Hat announced this change the entire industry started taking Oracle Linux and Amazon Linux seriously.
