Micro$haft has been moving to take control of the linux ecosystem. With their "open-source" initiatives aims at linux, like porting Powershell to the linux kernel. Once Micro$haft has a large enough share of the linux market, they will see opportunity to make more money--and drive consumer appeal for linux--by pushing for better gaming support for Linux.

At that point, I suspect Micro$haft will begin some new initiative that will be painted as "Micro$haft listening to the community" and because Micro$haft is such great people, they'll make a push for better gaming support.

All this to further solidify Micro$hafts control over the linux ecosystem. Most users are happy to give up their privacy, security, and system stability just so they can play games on their linux box. Once Micro$haft has "answered" this call, their code will become an intrinsic part of the Linux kernel/ecosystem. To remove Micro$hafts code would mean giving up many GPU/performance optimizations Micro$haft will have brought to the ecosystem.

The slow death cry of Linux has already been heard. It's only going to get louder.
