"Think of the orphans" is always an emotional appeal fallacy. If you have dependents, term life insurance and long term disability insurance are *incredibly* inexpensive. It's negligent not to purchase them if you have dependents and inadequate assets to support them if you die unexpectedly. If an irresponsible person has a gaggle of kids, chooses negligence, and gets hit by a bus...their orphans are neither legally nor morally my responsibility. *They* should have cared enough about their children to put in a few hours of effort and a token expense to provide for them. Now I choose to be exceptionally charitable to orphans *voluntarily*, but that's out of the goodness of my heart not a legal obligation.
