It sounds effective from a theoretical perspective: be isolationist with a strong enough military to bomb anyone who FAFO back into the stone age. From an applied perspective, it's invariably disastrous because of the perverse incentives to start wars to justify military spending (voters dont grasp the idea of a military as an insurance policy you hope remains unused) and military spending to buy political support from military contractors.
