Excluding a brief income tax in 1861 to fund the civil war, we didn't have a Federal Income tax until 1913.
I remember the total astonishment I felt when my mom told me all that back when I was in my esrly 20's - after I was whining about getting a raise at work which elevated my tax bracket and the higher % income tax took most of that raise.
