I would need a full size. Riding into town on rural roads with a minibike going 20 mph would be...interesting.
Used KLRs are cheap and dead reliable. You can outfit them with all sorts of adventure gear and up to 10 gallon fuel tank (500-550 mile range). Guys used to ride across Africa and South America with them before BMW and Co produced Long Way Round using their $30k bikes that still broke down.

I can do over 30mph on a cheap 6hp mini bike with a torque convertor on it and it's a lot of fun. Under $1,000.
