Maybe, maybe not. Rifles don't have the kind of paper trail that hand guns do. In most free states you can sell a rifle in a parking lot. Hell, I've done it a few times. As long as it sold to another resident of the state you can sell a rifle without a 4473 being filled out. It's intERstate commerce.
That said the gay-tf will probably be knocking on doors starting with the original buyer (IF it was purchased after 1993) and trying to get information that way.
Oh, I agree with you on the paper trail part. I just meant more from a forensics point of view. Any potential fingerprints (although suspect was likely wearing gloves), potential sweat or any other source of DNA.
If there isn't any evidence on the gun or ammo itself its going to make it a lot harder to find the shooter.
I would imagine they would have to look for cell phones in the area that left the area the fastest.
Not really sure though.
