As a young Marine, back in the early 70s, there were a few Marines who were fags, but they kept quiet about it and did their jobs and had successful enlistments. Some would get tired of being Marines and "come out" just so they could an early discharge. I even remember a Staff NCO who everyone knew was a fag but I'm pretty sure he made it to retirement. He just had an annoying habit of putting his hands on young Marines. You know, "Marine, your pocket is unbuttoned, your fly is open, etc...
