Genetic analysis have showed that gays have higher testosterone level. That's one way they try to explain why it wasn't bread out, it manifest a serious drawback in some, but in other it gives great benefit. Also, it makes women more promiscuous making it more likely to be passed down.
The parasite theory is interesting, but it sort of assume that modern western society is more infested with parasites than anywhere previously in the world. Which sounds counter intuitive.
Ethiopia has more parasites than anywhere in the world. Maybe they are incredibly gay there and we don't know it because they don't have a media broadcasting their gayness like we have here. Brazil also has a lot of parasites. Very gay to be certain.

The studies I've read estimate that around 1/2 of the American population has this parasite, and 3/4 of South Americans. Sorry I don't have a source on hand.
A big difference between the third world and US is that they culturally suppress homosexuality there --faggots get thrown off a roof. It could be that there are more gays there they just aren't public about it.
