No silhouette I ever shot at in the military had arms or legs.

That's the Skinnerian training method. "Human shape pops up- shoot it in chest, be praised. Repeat until instinctive." This was adopted a little after WW2, as researchers were trying to understand and get rid of "trigger finger frostbite". See, up until the Skinnerian method, soldiers very rarely shot to kill. They were trained to shoot to kill. But when they actually saw another person, and they were meant to shoot them- they can't do it. They subconsciously sabotage their shot. Or they put their weapon down, pick up a rock and throw it at the enemy.
