That's actually something of a conflict in lefty circles. Some of them believe that GID is a genetically heritable condition which causes the brain's hard coded gender identity not to match the body. Others believe that gender is like americans having barbeques and Indians eating curry, it's just something people do because it's what they're used to and they could just as easily do something else.
