It's becoming impossible for writers, both of fiction and nonfiction, to express themselves in a free and honest manner. I hate to think where this is headed, but it's not to a good place.

Yep but platforms and web domains are becoming more and more centralized. The US gave up control of the DNS list to an NGO a few years ago. I fear the worst is yet to come for web censoring.
